Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 7 Golden Eagles Stand Tall In Win Over Wildcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team kept the good times rolling Sunday against a familiar foe.

The Golden Eagles got a magnificent first-half goal from David Elizaga and a spectacular defensive showing to hand undefeated Chico State its first loss of the season, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association battle at University Stadium. No. 7 Cal State LA (7-0, 2-0 CCAA) kept a talented Chico State (5-1, 1-1 CCAA) at bay in one of its best defensive outings of the season. Elizaga, who now shares the team lead in goals with four, was at it again on Sunday. He started the game-winning play in the 11th minute by stealing the ball in Chico State's end of the field. He got the ball to Cyrille Njomo, who made a return pass to Elizaga. From there, Elizaga placed a beautiful shot just inside the far post to give the Golden Eagles the early lead.

That was the only real outstanding scoring chance in the game as two stout defensive teams battled it out. Cal State LA's talented Morten Bjoershol, Tim Klefisch, Antonio Rosas, Jorge Orellana and Jose Orellana all played the entire 90 minutes and were sensational throughout.

Alexander Brems made one save for the shutout and did a masterful job running the show, coming out of his box a couple of times to clear away potential threats. Chico State finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots and was able to finally put some pressure on the Golden Eagles late. Chico State also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA will now have its bye week and will return to action a week from Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
