LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team recovered nicely from a stunning start to its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Stanislaus State.
After the Warriors struck for a goal in the fourth minute of the game, the Golden Eagles responded with four goals in a 22-minute span and went on to a 5-1 win Friday at University Stadium. No. 7 Cal State LA (6-0, 1-0 CCAA) built a 4-1 halftime lead on goals by
Daniel Simonis,
Tim Klefisch,
Robin Lindahl and Hofmann. Cal State LA completed the scoring in the 57th minute with Hofmann's second goal of the game.
Cal State LA had a 21-3 advantage in shots, including a 14-2 edge in the opening half. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Warriors (3-3, 0-1 CCAA) shocked the Golden Eagles with a goal in the fourth minute. Dayne Sturtevant made a long run, eluded the defense into the box and sent in a cross that Ryan Kane knocked in for his third goal of the season.
Cal State LA, though, didn't take long to respond.
David Elizaga set up the goal with a good run down the right side and a beautiful cross to an open Simonis, who notched his first goal of the season.
Klefisch made it 2-1 with a penalty kick in the 17th minute to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. It was Klefisch's third goal of the season.
Just seven minutes later, Lindahl added his third goal of the season with another beautiful pass from Elizaga, who threaded the needle to Lindahl in between a pair of defenders. Lindahl sent a perfect shot inside the far post to make it 3-1.
Hofmann scored his first goal as a Golden Eagle when he was at the end of a nice passing sequence with
Angel Estrada and
Carl Solli and flicked in a shot to make it 4-1 in the 35th minute.
Hofmann finished the scoring with his second goal of the game in the 57th minute with an assist from
Jorge Orellana.
Alexander Brems made one save in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Justin Motzkus made seven saves for the Warriors.
Klefisch, Lindahl and
Morten Bjoershol took a game-high three shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action at home on Sunday against unbeaten Chico State at 11:30 a.m.Â
