LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team used some two-out magic to record its second victory over a nationally-ranked No. 1 team this season.
The Golden Eagles scored six times in the seventh inning after two were out and beat No. 1 UC San Diego, 11-5, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest Thursday night at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (17-21, 16-18 CCAA) split a pair of early-season games against then-No. 1 Colorado Mesa at Dixie State.
UC San Diego (26-8, 21-8 CCAA) entered this series with the No. 2 earned run average in the nation, but the Golden Eagles benefited from eight walks, three hit batters and five wild pitches. In the decisive seventh inning, the Golden Eagles scored six times on four hits to break a 5-5 tie.
The inning started innocently enough with the first two batters being retired.
Jordan Peabody singled to start the rally and
Jordan Myrow was hit by a pitch.
Anthony Moreno also drew a walk to load the bases and a walk to
Noe Garcia forced across the go-ahead run.
Tyler Odekirk also walked to force in another run and
Nic Sandoval singled in a pair of runs to make it 9-5. Odekirk scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 10-5 and
Nate Alam singled in the sixth run of the inning to make it 11-5.
Cal State LA got outstanding pitching performances from
Austin Nazabal and
Nick Moisant to keep the Golden Eagles in the game until the seventh-inning rally. Nazabal, making only his second start of the season, went the first 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and five runs, although only two of the runs were earned. He walked one and struck out six. Moisant was tremendous over the final 4 1/3 innings, blanking the Tritons on just one hit while walking only one and striking out 10.
UC San Diego starter Ted Stuka, who entered the game with a 5-1 record and a sparkling 1.72 earned run average, was knocked out of the game in the second inning after giving up four runs on just two hits with four walks and a hit batter. Noah Conlon was superb for the first five innings of his relief appearance, retiring 14 in a row before the Golden Eagles began their two-out rally in the seventh.
Sandoval drove in three runs for the Golden Eagles, while Myrow scored three runs and Odekirk scored twice and drove in a run. Sundahl had two of the Golden Eagles' eight hits and drove in one.
R.J. Prince hit a two-run home run for the Tritons, while Keenan Brigman and Shay Whitcomb each had two hits.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the first on a run-scoring single by Sundahl, but the Tritons bounced back with three runs in the second on a two-run home run by Prince and a run-scoring single by Brigman. Cal State LA was its own worst enemy in the inning with a costly error and a pair of missed foul pop-ups giving the Tritons extra chances.
Cal State LA regained the lead in the bottom of the second. Myrow walked and moved to third on a double by Moreno. Garcia walked to load the bases and, after Odekirk lined out to third, Sandoval was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Conlon came in for Stuka with a 1-0 count to Gordon, who promptly doubled in a pair of runs to make it 4-3.
Each team scored a run in the third inning and UC San Diego took advantage of a single by Michael Fuhrman and three straight two-out wild pitches that scored Fuhrman to tie it. Moisant came on and got a strikeout to end the inning and then blanked the Tritons the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will continue the series with UC San Diego with a game at Reeder Field on Friday at 6 p.m.
