Golden Eagles Falter Late In Loss To Tritons

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team battled back to tie Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association game against No. 1 UC San Diego, but the ending was not what the Golden Eagles had in mind.

The Golden Eagles erased a three-run deficit with three runs in the sixth inning, but the Tritons scored eight runs in their final two at bats to take an 11-5 decision at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (17-22, 16-19 CCAA) was looking for its second straight win over first-place UC San Diego (27-8, 22-8 CCAA), but issued 13 walks and allowed nine hits.

Spencer Sundahl had a pair of hits and two RBI, while Jordan Myrow also had two runs batted in. Tyler Odekirk scored a run and drove in a run, while Nate Alam scored two runs.

UC San Diego got a huge game from Alex Eliopulos, who had three doubles and drove in six runs. Aaron Kim added a three-run home run, his eighth homer of the season.

Saxon Andross kept the Golden Eagles in it and didn't allow an earned run over five innings while walking four and striking out six. After Andross departed, the Tritons scored 10 runs over the final four innings.

Kyle Lucke gave up three hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win for the Tritons.

The Tritons got an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth and extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Alex Athanacio and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Eliopulos.

Cal State LA, though, tied it with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Myrow doubled in a pair of runs with a line drive down the left-field line and scored on a single by Sundahl.

UC San Diego took advantage of an error and a fielder's choice that didn't yield an out to put together a six-run rally in the eighth. Eliopulos hit a bases-clearing double to break the tie and Kim hit a three-run home to push the lead to 11-3.

Cal State LA got a run back in the bottom of eighth on a run-scoring double by Sundahl, but Eliopulos doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to stretch the lead back to 11-4. The Golden Eagles finished the game when Odekirk lined a shot to right field for a sacrifice fly to drive in Jesse Burke.

Cal State LA will conclude the series with a doubleheader at UC San Diego on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
