LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got another outstanding day of pitching and completed an impressive California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep of Stanislaus State on Sunday.
Alec Daily,
Austin Nazabal and
Zachary Grande combined to limit the Warriors to four hits and three runs and the Golden Eagles held on for a 4-3 win at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (11-12, 10-9 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to seven games after beating Stanislaus State (13-11, 9-9 CCAA) for the fourth straight time. The Warriors had entered the series after a big 3-1 series win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State LA allowed only 11 runs in the four games against Stanislaus State.
Tyler Odekirk continued his hot hitting and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Jordan Peabody was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. His two-run single highlighted a three-run fifth inning that gave the Golden Eagles the lead.
Michael Tillman opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles with his third home run of the season.
Jack Large hit his second home run of the series and fourth of the season for the Warriors.
Daily won his second straight start with a strong seven-inning outing. He allowed only two hits and walked one while striking out eight. Nazabal worked an adventurous eighth inning in his return from injury and Grande stranded two runners on in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second inning when Tillman smacked his third home run of the season, a solo shot high over the left-field fence.
Daily retired the first 13 batters he faced, but Large broke up the no-hit bid with a home run to right to tie it at 1-1 in the fifth. Grant Bunker followed with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a run-scoring single by Matt Elser to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
Cal State LA regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Odekirk reached on a one-out single and stole second.
Nate Alam drew a walk andÂ
Jordan Myrow drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Peabody then punched an 0-2 pitch into right field for a single that drove in Odekirk and Alam and gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Myrow scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
Stanislaus State made it 4-3 in the sixth. Brandon De La Guardia reached third when his fly ball to right was dropped and he scored on a groundout by Vinny Margiotta.
That set things up for a frantic finish. Stanislaus State's Michael Wyatt greeted Nazabal with a line shot off Nazabal's foot for a single. Nazabal was able to remain in the game, but walked Grant Victor. Braeden Oki then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but Alam threw late to third base and everybody was safe, loading the bases with no outs. Nazabal got De La Guardia to pop up for the first out. He then uncorked a pitch that flew to the back stop. Cal State LA catcher
Noe Garcia raced quickly to get the ball and flipped a quick throw to Nazabal, who tagged out Wyatt at the plate attempting to tie the game.Â
Spencer Sundahl then snagged a line drive off the bat of Vinny Margiotta at first base to end the inning.
Grande gave up a leadoff double to Alexis Paz in the ninth and pinch runner Rylan Tinsley moved to third on a groundout by Large. Jacob Garcia grounded to second, where Peabody looked the runner back to third before recording the out at first for the second out of the inning. After a walk to Elser, Grande struck out Wyatt to end the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series at Chico State.Â
