LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in another stout defensive effort and clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament in the process.
The Golden Eagles overcame Humboldt State, 64-55, on Senior Day in University Gym to lock up one of the eight spots in the conference tournament. Cal State LA (16-11, 12-9 CCAA) completed its first weekend sweep of the season and moved into sixth place in the conference. The Golden Eagles are percentage points behind Cal State Dominguez Hills, pending the outcome of the Toros' Saturday night game against Chico State.
Cal State LA also pulled to within one-half game of fourth-place San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles' win on Saturday came in a scrappy contest. Cal State LA shot just 32.3 percent for the game (21-of-65) and was just 9-of-35 from 3-point range, but held Humboldt State (16-12, 10-10 CCAA) to just 28.8 percent shooting (17-of-59). The 'Jacks were just 2-of-17 from 3-point range. Cal State LA also missed half of its 26 free-throw tries, while the 'Jacks were 19-of-30.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 51-42, but had a big edge in turnovers for a second straight game. The Golden Eagles forced 16 Humboldt State turnovers and committed only nine.
Devin Means scored a team-high 15 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Miles Ford had 11.
Justin Everett had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds for the 'Jacks, while Calvin Young II had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Shacquille Dawkins had nine points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Anthony Fitzpatrick had six points and eight rebounds.
Cal State LA took a 31-28 halftime lead and, after opening the second half by scoring the first nine points, led by at least six points the rest of the way.
Ja'Sean Lewis opened the second half with a 3-pointer,
Fard Muhammad hit a basket and
Jordan Rogers made a pair of layups to give the Golden Eagles a 40-28 lead with 17:30 to go. Humboldt State closed to within seven points, 48-41, with 10:23 to go, but Means hit a layup to stop the run. The 'Jacks again cut the margin to seven points, 50-43, but Fitzpatrick hit a pair of free throws and Dawkins converted a three-point play to bump the lead back to 55-43 with 6:29 to go.
The Golden Eagles saw the margin cut to six points, 55-49, with 2:48 to go, but Dawkins hit a pair of free throws and Means hit a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach.
