Golden Eagles Post Another Big Road Comeback

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team fittingly had one final comeback left in it to end the regular-season Thursday night at Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles, who have had a number of big comeback wins this season, chalked up another one on Thursday, erasing a 15-point deficit and holding off the Warriors, 67-65, in the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (17-11, 13-9) finished its conference schedule with its best record since going 13-9 in the 2012-13 season.

Cal State LA is currently in fifth in the conference, one-half game behind San Francisco State. The Golden Eagles, though, lost both regular-season games to the Gators so San Francisco State will be hosting a first-round game on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles will wind up with either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed depending on Saturday's results and travel for a first-round tournament game.

Jordan Rogers led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, including a game-deciding three-pointer with 21 seconds left that gave the Golden Eagles a 65-60 lead and essentially decided the game. Kenneth Cyprian and Fard Muhammad finished with 10 points each.

Miles Ford and Jihad Woods had eight points each.

Cal State LA shot just 35.7 percent overall (20-of-56) and made only 8-of-30 from 3-point range. Stanislaus State (11-14, 8-13 CCAA) shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44), but made only 5-of-17 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 19-of-29 from the free-throw line, while Stanislaus State was 12-of-19.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 31-30, but forced 28 turnovers while committing 19.

The Golden Eagles fought an uphill battle right out of the gates. They allowed the first seven points of the game and trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening half. A late 3-pointer by Muhammad and three free throws by Cyprian pulled the Golden Eagles to within 36-31 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles then fell behind, 48-33, with 15:38 to go before making their comeback. Cal State LA went on a 9-0 run that started with a Muhammad layup, a Rogers 3-pointer, a free throw by Muhammad and another 3-pointer by Rogers. The Golden Eagles finished up what turned out to be an 18-3 run with a layup by Muhammad that tied it at 51-51 with 9:14 to go.

A basket by Shacquille Dawkins tied the game at 53-53 and a layup by Cyprian gave the Golden Eagles their first lead, 59-58, with 4:57 to go.

A free throw by Cyprian and a pair of free throws by Rogers gave the Golden Eagles a 62-58 lead with 3:48 to go. After the Warriors made it 62-60, neither team scored until Rogers' big 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament at an undetermined site.
