LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team took care of business Thursday night in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Chico State by taking care of the ball.
The Golden Eagles committed only eight turnovers while forcing a whopping 25 by the Wildcats and that made a big difference in a 69-57 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-11, 11-9 CCAA) climbed into sixth-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino with two games remaining. The Golden Eagles are also just one-half game behind fifth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1 1/2 games behind fourth-place San Francisco State and one-half game ahead of eighth-place Humboldt State.
The Golden Eagles also put more distance between themselves and ninth-place Chico State (9-11, 8-11 CCAA). The top eight teams qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
The story of the Thursday's game clearly was the turnover disparity. Chico State's 25 turnovers were the most in a game for the Wildcats since 2008.
Ja'Sean Lewis had 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack.
Fard Muhammad and
Shacquille Dawkins had 10 points each. Nine players scored in the game for the Golden Eagles.
Kevin Warren had 17 points to lead Chico State, while Malik Duffy had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Jihad Woods and
Anthony Fitzpatrick scored eight points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 45.8 percent for the game (27-of-59) and was 9-of-30 from 3-point range. Chico State shot 46.2 percent (18-of-39) and was 6-of-12 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles made only 6-of-16 from the free-throw line, while the Wildcats were 15-of-25.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 36-26.
Cal State LA had a 26-6 edge in points scored off turnovers.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and took a 12-5 lead after a steal and basket by Fitzpatrick. The Wildcats surged toward the end of the first half and took a 31-27 lead, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a 7-0 run and never looked back. Kikuchi started the run with a 3-pointer, A steal by Dawkins led to a layup by Means to give Cal State LA the lead and a layup by Dawkins gave the Golden Eagles a 34-31 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Dawkins and layup by Means gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 44-34 and a dunk by Lewis gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 52-38 with 11:44 to go. Chico State pulled to within eight points with plenty of time remaining, but a pair of free throws by Fitzpatrick, a pair of free throws by Kikuchi and a dunk by Lewis built the lead to 14 points again, 69-55, with three minutes left.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with its final regular-season home game of the season against Humboldt State at 3 p.m. on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will honor
