SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had its troubles down the stretch in a California Collegiate Athletic Association loss at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles trailed by just two points with 1:42 remaining, but four turnovers and a pair of missed shots led to a game-ending 10-0 run for the Cougars and an 82-70 loss for Cal State LA in The Sports Center.
Cal State LA (13-11, 9-9 CCAA) missed a chance to pick up ground on the teams just ahead of the Golden Eagles in the tightly-packed conference standings.
Ja'Sean Lewis had a team-high 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for a powerful double-double for the Golden Eagles.
Jihad Woods and
Shacquille Dawkins scored nine points each.
Dalton Soffer had a game-high 22 points for Cal State San Marcos (6-17, 3-14 CCAA).
Kenneth Cyprian had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Rogers and
Anthony Fitzpatrick had seven points each.
Cal State LA shot just 38.8 percent for the game (26-of-67) and was 10-of-38 from 3-point range. Cal State San Marcos shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) overall and made 8-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 8-of-17 from the free-throw line, while the Cougars were 20-of-28. Cal State LA had a 48-40 rebounding edge and committed 20 turnovers to 16 for the Cougars.
In the second half, Cal State LA was just 2-of-5 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Marcos, after going 1-of-7 from the line in the first half, went 19-of-21 in the second half.
The game was close throughout and neither team built leads larger than six points until the final game-ending run by the Cougars.
Cal State LA held a 34-32 halftime lead and built its largest lead at 42-36 on a 3-pointer by Lewis with 17 minutes to go. A 3-pointer by Dawkins gave the Golden Eagles a 65-62 lead and a basket by Fitzpatrick gave the Golden Eagles their final lead at 67-66 with 2:56 to go.
Cal State LA allowed the next six points before a 3-pointer by
Fard Muhammad made it 72-70 with 1:42 remaining. The Golden Eagles, after a called timeout, got a stop and a rebound, but turned the ball over and the Cougars responded with a 3-pointer for a 75-70 lead. Cal State LA was unable to score the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at UC San Diego on Saturday.
