Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Road Win Over Tritons

LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was firing on all cylinders Saturday night at UC San Diego and the Golden Eagles picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win in the process.

The Golden Eagles knocked down 15 of their 27 attempts from 3-point range and went on to blitz the Tritons, 76-61, in RIMAC Arena. Cal State LA (14-11, 10-9 CCAA) beat UC San Diego (18-7, 13-5 CCAA) for the second time this season and kept pace in a tightly-bunched CCAA pack. The Golden Eagles are 1 1/2 games behind fourth-place San Francisco State and one-half game behind Humboldt State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino.

Ja'Sean Lewis had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack. Fard Muhammad had 13 points, while Kenneth Cyprian and Jordan Rogers had 10 points each.

Christian Bayne had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Tritons.

Anthony Fitzpatrick and Miles Ford had eight points each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 44 percent for the game (22-of-50), but the Golden Eagles were on fire behind the 3-point arc, hitting 55.6 percent of their long-range shots. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-14 from 3-point range in the first half and 8-of-13 in the second half. UC San Diego shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) and was just 7-of-29 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was also 17-of-21 from the free-throw line, while UC San Diego was 8-of-9. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 37-34, but committed only 10 turnovers to 12 for the Tritons.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but closed the period with a 20-6 run to take a 33-26 halftime lead. Muhammad and Rogers hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 25-22 edge and back-to-back 3-pointers late in the half by Lewis and Muhammad gave the Golden Eagles their seven-point lead.

Cal State LA then broke the game open in the second half with a 17-2 run that extended a 43-36 lead to a 60-38 advantage with 9:41 to go. Ford hit a 3-pointer to start the run and FItzpatrick hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open up a 52-36 lead. Lewis followed with a dunk and Bailey Kikuchi hit a 3-pointer to complete a 14-0 run and give the Golden Eagles a 57-36 lead. After a UC San Diego basket, Lewis followed with another 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles their 22-point edge.

The Golden Eagles kept at least a 13-point lead the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Chico State at 7:30 p.m.
