MALIBU -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put up quite a battle Friday against NCAA Division I Pepperdine.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early five-point lead and were within three points early in the fourth quarter before Pepperdine pulled away for a 79-56 victory. It was an exhibition game for the Golden Eagles, while Pepperdine improved to 4-2 in a game that counted for the Waves.
Alyssa Fisher had a team-high 13 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Amiete Nyingifa had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Monique Andriuolo had 22 points and seven rebounds for Pepperdine, while Paige Fecske added 18 points and six rebounds.
Nicole Flennaugh had nine points and seven assists for Cal State LA.
The Golden Eagles shot 23-of-64 (35.9 percent) for the game and were 6-of-19 from 3-point range. Pepperdine was 33-of-74 (44.6 percent) overall, including 13-of-20 in the fourth quarter.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 54-29.
The Golden Eagles started well and took an early 7-2 lead. Flennaugh opened the contest with a 3-pointer and baskets by
Rachael DiRegolo and
Mackenzie Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 7-2 lead. A basket by
Rachael DiRegolo kept the Golden Eagles ahead, 9-6. Three straight baskets by Nyingifa kept the Golden Eagles within 17-15 after one quarter.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Sydney Bordonaro and Fisher got the Golden Eagles to within 41-36 and a layup by Nyingifa made it 47-43 late in the second period. Pepperdine held a 49-43 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by
Yesenia Smith to open the fourth quarter pulled the Golden Eagles to within 49-46, but that was as close as they would get. Pepperdine had a 30-13 advantage in the final quarter.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home conference game against San Francisco State at 5:30 p.m.
