Box Score AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team opened its 2019-20 season Thursday in the ITA Fall Regionals hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Chelsey Ruiz,
Mariko Sagara and
Sakura Kurokawa split singles matches in the main draw for the Golden Eagles, while
Alexandra Altamirano and
Berta Acero advanced through two rounds of the Cougar Open Division.
Ruiz, who was seeded seventh in the bracket, picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lada Baglaeva of Holy Names in the opening round before falling to Turchak of Sonoma State in the second round, 6-2, 6-2. Sagara beat Kayla Nguyen of Stanislaus State, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 before falling to Lea Falentin of Fresno Pacific, 6-1, 6-2.
Amanda Schneider fell to Stanislaus State's Kate Bolton in the first round, 1-6, 6-1, 10-8.
In doubles, Ruiz and Acero dropped a tight 8-6 decision to a team from Point Loma, while Kurokawa and Sagara led in their match, 2-1, before retiring.
Altamirano defeated Alexandria Rogers of Dominican, 6-3, 6-0, in the open division and advanced through the second round due to a withdrawal. She will continue play on Friday. Acero defeated Hartmann of Biola, 6-3, 6-1
