HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Cal State LA's beach volleyball team recorded the first two wins in the young program's history Friday at Golden West College.
The Golden Eagles picked up a 4-1 win over San Diego City College in their opener and then edged the host Rustlers, 3-2, to complete a successful first day of competition in the 2018 season.
Cal State LA's
Karla Santos and
Alejandra Negron won twice at the No. 1 spot, while
Bailey Anderson and
Janessa Mata were victorious twice at No. 2.
In the opening match against San Diego City College (1-2), Santos and Negron beat Lysette Serra and Brielle McKinnon, 21-19, 18-21, 15-8 at No. 1 pairs, Anderson and Mata beat Julia Ferraro and Bree Reid, 21-18, 19-21, 15-12 at No. 2 pairs,
Jeshmarie Suarez and
Erianna Williams lost to Shatha Julima and Izzy DeNardi, 21-13, 21-10 at No. 3 pairs,
Daisia LaBrie and
Caitlyn Bato beat Wonder and Malea Weakland, 21-19, 21-13 at No. 4 pairs and
Michelle Boyd and
Victoria Duarte beat Marissa Thomas and Isabella Rubio, 21-15, 21-11, at No. 5 pairs.
Against Golden West College (3-1), Santos and Negron beat Ashleigh Atsaros and Andrea Gonzalez, 18-21, 24-22, 15-7 at No. 1 pairs, Anderson and Mata beat Jasmine Gonzales and Akimi Fujikura, 21-17, 15-21, 16-14 at No. 2 pairs, LaBrie and Bato lost to Chrerene Uale and Amanda Sosa, 22-20, 21-19, at No. 3 pairs, Suarez and Williams beat Keilani Pearson and Erica Cantley, 27-25, 21-18, at No. 4 pairs and Boyd and Duarte lost to Melissa Martinez and Holly Hennessy, 21-11, 20-22, 15-12 at No. 5 pairs.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday, March 8 with matches against Concordia and Cal State Northridge at Cal State Northridge.
