Golden Eagles Show Resolve In Second Straight Sweep

CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball team showed some resiliency Saturday on its way to a big California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles took the opener of a doubleheader, 10-5, and appeared to be on their way to a sweep before being stung by a six-run Cal State Dominguez Hills rally in the sixth inning of the nightcap that tied it at 7-7. The Golden Eagles, though, responded with a clutch four-run rally in the top of the eighth to record an 11-7 win and a second straight CCAA series sweep.

Cal State LA (14-7, 11-5 CCAA) stretched its winning streak to eight games and took over first place in the CCAA.

The Golden Eagles did the job with a prolific offensive attack on Saturday. Cal State LA had 21 runs and 29 hits in the doubleheader.

The Golden Eagles collected 13 hits in the opener to back a strong start from James Mendez, who picked up his third win of the season after allowing five hits and three earned runs over six innings. Cal State LA also got effective relief performances from Austin Nazabal, Robbie Stowell, Sean Watkins and George Alamillo. Stowell got the final out of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and Cal State LA hanging on to a 5-4 lead. Watkins got the final out of the eighth inning with Cal State LA holding on to a 6-5 advantage and Alamillo got the final three outs in the ninth.

Cal State LA trailed early, 3-1, but got a solo home run from Gordon in the fourth and a run-scoring single by Andre Gregory in the fifth to tie it. Gordon doubled and scored on an error to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead in the sixth and Jordan Peabody added a run-scoring single to make it 5-3.

Gregory was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth and Cal State LA got run-scoring singles by Zach Grande and Peabody and a two-run double by Ayala to pick up four big insurance runs in the ninth.

Peabody and Ayala had three hits each in the opener, while Gordon and Johnson had two hits each.

Cal State LA then opened up a 7-1 lead in the nightcap behind some outstanding pitching from Saxon Andross, who allowed only one hit and an unearned run through the first five innings. The Golden Eagles scored four times in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring double by Ayala, a two-run triple by Gregory and a run-scoring single by Garcia.

Andross, though, suddenly ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning and the Toros tied it with six runs on five hits. Greg Humbert was greeted by a game-tying two-run double, but got the final two outs of the inning without further damage to keep the game tied.

Cal State LA took the lead for good in the eighth. Gregory started the game-winning rally with a double, Nic Bereaud was intentionally walked and Moreno walked to load the bases. Gordon delivered a two-run double to give the Golden Eagles a 9-7 lead and Johnson added a two-run single to make it 11-7.

Dylan Suppan pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series at Stanislaus State.

Ayala and Gregory both had three hits in the nightcap, while Anthony Moreno, Gordon, Armett Johnson and Jorge Garcia had two hits each.
