Golden Eagles Race To A High-Scoring Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was firing on all cylinders and then some Friday night in a non-conference game against Bethesda University.

The Golden Eagles exploded for 71 points in the first half and went on to a 123-61 win over the Flames in University Gym. Cal State LA (6-3) shot nearly 54 percent for the game and forced 28 turnovers in the victory. Brandon Hitchman and Fard Muhammad led six Golden Eagles in double figures with 20 points.

Cal State LA's 71-point first half was just one point off the program record of 72 points in a half against Long Beach State in 1964 and Cal State Northridge in 1968. The program record for most points in a game is 138 set against the University of Redlands in 2005.

The Golden Eagles, who set program records for most 3-pointers made (21) and attempted (52) in a 106-81 win over Bethesda last season, were an efficient 16-of-35 from 3-point range on Friday. Cal State LA also did a nice job sharing the basketball and had a season-high 30 assists on 48 made baskets.

Cal State LA was 48-of-89 overall (53.9 percent) and knocked down 11-of-15 from the free-throw line. The Flames (1-8) shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) and were 7-of-25 from 3-point range. Bethesda was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Shacquille Dawkins had 16 points and five assists, Jordan Rogers had 14 points, three rebounds and three assists and Ja'Sean Lewis had 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Serigne Athj had 10 points, two assists and two steals.

Branden Charbonier had 18 points for the Flames, while Michael Johnson had 14 points and Igli Pirgu had 11.

Kenneth Cyprian, Miles Ford and Anthony Fitzpatrick had eight points each. Fitzpatrick also had 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Jihad Woods had six points.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 16 in a conference game at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Golden Eagles' next home game is Wednesday, Dec. 19 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
