Golden Eagles Stay Strong In Win Over Otters

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team needed a strong performance Sunday in order to subdue Cal State Monterey Bay and that's exactly what the Golden Eagles got.

The Golden Eagles were able to withstand every Otter run and posted an 85-75 California Collegiate Athletic Association win in the Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (7-3, 3-1 CCAA) took the lead for good late in the first half and maintained an advantage despite several second-half challenges from Cal State Monterey Bay (0-10, 0-6 CCAA).

Anthony Fitzpatrick had his best game of the season for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 24 points and also grabbing 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. Fard Muhammad had 16 points and knocked down 3-of-5 from 3-point range, while Devin Means came up big late and scored 12 points. Ja'Sean Lewis had 11 points.

Joseph Bosetti had 15 points to lead five Cal State Monterey Bay players in double figures.

Shacquille Dawkins and Brandon Hitchman scored eight points each.

Cal State LA was efficient on offense and shot 50.8 percent for the game (32-of-63), while Cal State Monterey Bay shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61). The Golden Eagles were 8-of-26 from 3-point range, while the Otters were 8-of-28. Cal State LA struggled a bit from the free-throw line, making just 13-of-23, while the Otters were 15-of-18.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 39-34, but committed only nine turnovers to 18 for the Otters.

The Golden Eagles trailed early, 9-7, but got a layup from Muhammad after a steal from Means, two free throws each by Fitzpatrick and Hitchman and a tip-in by Lewis to take a 15-9 lead. The Golden Eagles opened up a 23-15 lead after a layup by Kenneth Cyprian, but the Otters scored the next eight points to tie it. The game was still tied at 25-25 before Fitzpatrick scored the next five points to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good.

The Golden Eagles had a 40-34 lead at halftime, but the Otters pulled to within three points at 54-51 before a basket by Miles Ford and a 3-pointer by Means boosted the advantage to 59-51. The Otters cut the margin to 65-61, but the Golden Eagles responded with a tip-in by Fitzpatrick and a layup by Lewis to extend the lead to 69-61.

Means hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 77-67 lead with 5:37 to go and Cal State LA went on to the important conference road victory.

Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
