LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team, which had run its winning streak to four with a monumental upset of No. 5 Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, was unable to duplicate that performance on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, playing their fifth match against nationally-ranked opponents in the past eight days, fell against No. 22 Academy of Art, 5-1, at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (10-5), ranked 29th in the country, picked up a point at No. 3 doubles from
Elizaveta Sokolova and Luciana DiLaura. The Cal State LA duo pulled out an 8-6 decision over Monika Stanikova and Paula Alcantara.
Academy of Art took two doubles contests and the match was called after the first three points in singles were decided in the visitors' favor.
Nozomi Matsuoka at No. 1 singles,
Kayleigh Hall at No. 2 singles and Di Laura at No. 5 singles lost their matches in straight sets. The match ended early because Academy of Art had a scheduled flight to catch.
The early finish deprived Sokolova of an almost certain victory at No. 3 singles. She was serving at match point, up 7-5, 6-5, when play stopped.
Iris Raileanu was locked in a tight battle at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 3-4 and
Isabella Lopez was in a close match at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 4-5.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a road match at Concordia Irvine.
