LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled for five hours and recorded its biggest win of the season Tuesday at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
Iris Raileanu came up with a clutch performance at No. 4 singles and secured the final point of a thrilling 5-4 win over Sonoma State. The Golden Eagles (9-4), ranked 29th in the nation, picked up two wins in doubles and then split the six singles contests to record the tight win over the Seawolves (7-6), who are ranked 23rd in the country. Cal State LA recorded its third win in a row.
It was a great day all-around for Raileanu, who also picked up a big point in doubles with
Isabella Lopez at No. 2 doubles. The duo edged Amanda Zuidema and Jenna DeTurk, 8-6, in the final match of the three doubles contests to finish. Earlier in the day, Raileanu was named the PacWest Conference Player of the Week. She is now 10-1 in dual matches this season.
Lopez also had a tremendous afternoon. She moved up from her customary No. 6 spot in the singles rotation to the No. 5 spot when
Luciana Di Laura was unable to compete in singles. Lopez was impressive while posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over DeTurk.
Judy Ung played at No. 6 singles for the Golden Eagles and competed well.
Di Laura and
Elizaveta Sokolova were victorious at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, to get the Golden Eagles off to a strong start.
Kayleigh Hall also picked up a big win in singles, beating Jordyn Kearney, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Nozomi Matsuoka battled hard in a loss at No. 1 singles to Sonoma State's Jensyn Warren and also played well with Hall in a close 8-5 loss at No. 1 doubles.
Cal State LA will return to action with another big home match on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against No. 5 Hawaii Pacific.
