LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's tennis team got a dynamic performance from their doubles combinations and used that advantage to key an important West Region victory.
Cal State LA swept all three doubles contests and went on to a 7-2 win over Concordia Irvine on Friday at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. It was a big victory for the Golden Eagles (7-4), who are ranked 29
th in the nation. Concordia (7-5) is ranked 31
st in the nation.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Kayleigh Hall wrapped up a perfect score in doubles for the Golden Eagles with an 8-5 victory at the No. 1 spot over Concordia's Samantha Schuster and Johanna Keeline.
Iris Raileanu and
Isabella Lopez won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, over Luma Schwab and Ghada Al-ajeely and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Luciana Di Laura won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2, over Ashley Glick and Anastasiia Kuprina.
The singles matches got off to an usual start when Raileanu picked up a win at No. 4 singles when her opponent retired after the first set and Kuprina picked up Concordia's first point at No. 1 singles after her opponent retired after the first set.
The Golden Eagles picked up the fifth and deciding point from Hall, who battled through an upset stomach to outlast Schwab at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Di Laura won a tight match at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 and
Judy Ung filled in at No. 6 singles and picked up a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 10-6 win.
Cal State LA will play another nationally-ranked team at home on Sunday when the Golden Eagles host No. 38 Rollins at 11 a.m.
