CLAREMONT – Cal State LA's women's tennis team passed its first big test of the 2017 season.
The Golden Eagles got some big wins from the bottom three spots in the singles lineup to edge NCAA Division III power Pomona-Pitzer, 5-4, Saturday afternoon. Cal State LA won two of the three doubles contests to post a win over the No. 6-ranked team in the NCAA Division III.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Kayleigh Hall picked up a big win at No. 1 doubles over Maryann Zhao and Joy Kim, 8-1, and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Luciana Di Laura posted an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Grace Hruska and Emily Chen.
The Golden Eagles then dropped the top three singles contests, all in straight sets.
Iris Raileanu picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Shivani Doraiswami at No. 4 singles and Di Laura and
Isabella Lopez got wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to earn the victory for Cal State LA. Di Laura pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Kim at No. 5 singles and Lopez rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a big home match against Point Loma beginning at 1:30 p.m.
