LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's tennis team had a little fun Friday on its Faculty, Friends and Family Day and the Golden Eagles also got themselves a victory.
The day started with a new-look for head coach Sandy Kriezel and ended with an 8-1 win over Holy Names. Cal State LA (6-2) swept the three doubles contests and won five of the six singles matches.
Kriezel made a bold declaration prior to the match by unveiling some new streaks of purple hair and the Golden Eagles erupted in cheers and then got serious about their tennis. The day included pizza for the first 50 fans to arrive and the team was supported by several other Cal State LA student-athletes.
Nozomi Matsuoka and Kayleigh Hall set the tone for the day with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Elizaveta Sokolova and Luciana Di Laura at No. 2 doubles and Iris Raileanu and Pyper Brown at No. 3 doubles won by scores of 8-4.
Matsuoka dropped a tight three-set match at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-2 (10-4) to Jahan Bayramova, but the Golden Eagles won the other singles matches in straight sets. Hall won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, Sokolova won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, Raileanu won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0, Di Laura won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2 and Brown won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against UC San Diego beginning at 11 a.m.
