HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Cal State LA's beach volleyball team squeezed in a pair of matches on Friday despite chilly and windy conditions.
The Golden Eagles fell to host Golden West College, 3-2, early Friday morning and then came right back and dropped a 5-0 decision to Concordia. The matches were moved up due to expected to rain and the Golden Eagles' first match began at 9 a.m.
"The second match (versus Concordia), we were really tired," Cal State LA interim head coach
Juan Figueroa said. "I thought they played well versus Golden West. I was hoping we were going to win at least three matches; we competed really well. The weather was insane; it was very cold and very windy."
Iona Lofrano and
Lauren Gomez picked up a 23-21, 21-13 win at the No. 1 spot in the first match against Golden West and
Kelsey Molnar and
Yamani Wallace prevailed at No. 3, 21-16, 21-17. Cal State LA's No. 2 team of
Cynthia Giron and
JamieAnn Bero fell, 21-13, 21-15, the No. 4 team of
Taylor Kushner and
Caitlyn Bato fell, 25-23, 21-19 and the No. 5 team of
Daisy Crenshaw and
Nicole Efseaff fell, 21-12, 21-9.
In the second match against Concordia, Lofrano and Gomez lost, 21-11, 21-18, Giron and Bero lost 21-13, 21-18, Molnar and Wallace lost, 23-21, 21-6, Effseaff and Daisha La Brie lost 21-4, 21-14 and Kushner and Bato lost 18-21, 21-17, 15-12.
"It started raining and it was very windy," Figueroa said. "If you're not used to being in the sand, it's tough. It was fun. We'll keep working and improving."
Cal State LA will return to action on March 7 with a tournament at Long Beach State.
