Golden Eagles Double Their Fun On Friday

ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- Cal State LA's baseball team wound up doubling its pleasure Friday with a pair of victories over Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents.

Due to a change in the schedule because of rain, the Golden Eagles played twice on Friday and recorded a 13-3 win over Concordia of Portland and a 7-3 win over Saint Martin's. Cal State LA (7-2) will play the same two opponents on Saturday, weather permitting.

Christian Broussard, Jr. had another sensational day for the Golden Eagles, hitting a pair of home runs and driving in four runs in the win over Concordia. In case that wasn't enough, he was also the winning pitcher, going six strong innings and allowing only one earned run. It's the second time this season that Broussard has homered twice in a game he has pitched.

Garrett Dean also had a big game at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and his third home run of the season. Andrew Hermanson drove in three runs, Tommy Pincin was 3-for-6 and Sean Watkins had a pair of hits and scored a run from the leadoff spot.

Broussard allowed five hits and walked one while striking out eight on the mound. Daniel Ferrell tossed two scoreless innings of relief and Holden Berger finished up with a scoreless ninth inning.

Hermanson hit a two-run double to get the Golden Eagles off and running in the first and Dean's solo home run in the third made it 4-0.

Broussard hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a solo shot in the sixth. He also drew a bases-loaded walk as part of a five-run rally in the seventh.

In the nightcap, James Mendez had a strong start for the Golden Eagles, allowing only five hits and one earned run over six innings of a 7-3 victory over Saint Martin's. Mendez improved to 2-1 after his first start of the season. Ryan Dixon did well in relief, allowing only one run over 2 2/3 innings and Gabriel Gentner got the final out with the bases loaded to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Nathan Navarrete went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the leadoff spot and Watkins was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in the second spot in the order. Dean drove in two more runs and Hermanson also added two more RBI. Drew Seelman was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Cal State LA erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring twice in the third and five times in the fourth. Dean had a two-run single in the third to give the Golden Eagles the lead. Watkins had a two-run single in the fourth, Jorge Garcia walked with the bases loaded to force in another run and Hermanson had a two-run double to account for the rest of the Cal State LA offense.

Cal State LA will return to action with a pair of games on Saturday, weather permitting. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to face Concordia at 1:30 p.m. (PST) and Saint Martin's at 5 p.m. (PST).
