Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Get OT Winner To Get Into Tourney

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team came up big when it had to Saturday with a trip to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.

Needing a win to get in the tournament, the Golden Eagles got an overtime goal from Julian Zamora to beat Chico State, 1-0. Cal State LA (12-4-2, 6-4-2 CCAA) will be making its seventh straight trip to the conference tournament. The Golden Eagles earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed Chico State in a rematch on Tuesday in Chico at 4 p.m.

It was an action-packed match between two of the conference's powerhouses. Chico State (10-5-2, 8-2-2 CCAA) could have wrapped up the regular-season title with a victory, while Cal State LA was needing a win to get into the tournament so the regular-season finale certainly had a playoff feel to it.

Both goalkeepers were outstanding in the match to keep it scoreless into overtime. Chico State goalkeeper Damion Lewis made nine saves, while Cal State LA's Steven Barrera also made nine saves as the Golden Eagles recorded their ninth shutout of the season.

Chico State had a 19-14 edge in shots, while Cal State LA had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Barrera was at his best in the first half, when he made three spectacular stops from point-blank range, including a pair back-to-back from Donta'e Garcia and Andrew McCombs in the 37th minute. Lewis made a big stop on Zamora in the first half to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.

Tim Klefisch had an outstanding chance in the second half that Lewis made a diving stop to keep out of the net and Lewis made another big save on Zamora in the 78th minute for the Wildcats.

Barrera made a big stop on a bid by Christian Roman with five minutes left that led to a corner kick and Cal State LA's defense stood tall and the game went into overtime.

Barrera made a pair of saves early in overtime and the Golden Eagles later struck for the game's only goal. Rigoberto Maciel set up the goal, perfecting a nice give-and-go with Zamora, who shot from an angle just inside the far post to get Cal State LA into the conference tourney.

The Golden Eagles honored their eight seniors -- Narbeh Shabani, Adrian Diaz, Hakon Laugsand, Miguel Galvan Lara, Steven Eberle, Julian Zamora, Rigoberto Maciel and Steven Barrera in pregame ceremonies.
