Golden Eagles Stage Remarkable Rally To Stun Chico

CHICO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team staged a comeback for the ages in a stunning turnaround Tuesday in a first-round California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament match with Chico State.

The Golden Eagles played a remarkable second half, erasing a 3-1 deficit and stunning the Wildcats, 4-3, in Chico State's University Soccer Stadium. Cal State LA (13-4-2) climbed up off the mat after Chico State (10-6-2) had scored three goals in a three-minute span early in the contest to erase a 1-0 Cal State LA lead.

The Golden Eagles never quit, though, and a determined effort in the second half finally paid dividends. Damian Roszczyk scored all three second-half goals for the Golden Eagles, including the game-winner with just 1:29 remaining.

The hat trick was the first for a Cal State LA men's player since Aza Gomez in 2009.

The first-round match on Tuesday was a rematch of Saturday's regular-season finale that the Golden Eagles needed to win just to qualify for the tournament. Julian Zamora's overtime goal lifted the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win and earned them the No. 5 seed and a trip to No. 4 seed Chico State.

The rematch was strikingly different from the first meeting as the offenses exploded out of the gate.

Zamora scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the sixth minute of the game to give the Golden Eagles a quick 1-0 lead. Steven Eberle sent in a long pass that Zamora was able to control and beat the goalkeeper to the right post.

Chico State, though, responded with three goals - two by leading scorer Jeremiah Egujie - in less than three minutes to take a 3-1 lead.

Egujie's first goal came from a big shot from the top of the box in the seventh minute. Then, just 1:08 later, he struck again off a corner kick by Fabian Roman.

The Wildcats got their third goal just 1:37 after that on Justin Bethke's goal off another corner kick by Roman.

The Golden Eagles weathered the assault and, after breaking for halftime, came back with a splendid final 45 minutes of play.

Roszczyk entered the game as a substitute in the 62nd minute and made his presence felt immediately, scoring his second goal of the season just 46 seconds later to make it 3-2. Tim Klefisch and Morten Bjoershol got the assists after Bjoershol headed the ball back to Roszczyk after a corner kick for a point-blank shot.

Roszczyk tied it in the 78th minute with an assist from Kareem Salem, knocking in a shot after it hit the crossbar.

At that point, Roszczyk got a breather for about seven minutes and then re-entered in time to win the game. More Cal State LA pressure resulted in a corner kick by Miguel Galvan Lara and Roszcczyk headed it to the near post to give the Golden Eagles the lead.

Chico State got off one final shot, but a long attempt went high and the Golden Eagles advanced to the semi-finals.

Cal State LA had a 17-11 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 edge in the beautifully-played second half. The Golden Eagles had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

Steven Barrera made two saves for Cal State LA.

Cal State LA will now face No. 1 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills in a semi-final match at UC San Diego. Game time has not yet been set, pending tonight's UCSD-San Francisco State outcome.
