AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team came up short in a monumental battle with nearby rival Azusa Pacific Monday in Azusa.
The Golden Eagles rallied from an early doubles deficit to tie the match, but Azusa Pacific won the final three singles contests to post a 6-3 victory at the Cougar Tennis Complex. Cal State LA picked up one point in doubles when its No. 2 team of
Isabella Lopez and
Iris Raileanu beat Kara Hinton and Lilit Vardanyan, 8-6. The Golden Eagles then picked up a pair of straight-set victories at No. 1 singles from
Nozomi Matsuoka and No. 4 singles from Raileanu, but the Golden Eagles (11-8) lost the final three singles matches off the court, all in three sets, and Azusa Pacific (13-6) prevailed.
Matsuoka was impressive in the feature match of the day, winning in straight sets over Natalie Johnson, 6-3, 6-3. Raileanu also won her match impressively, beating Hinton, 6-4, 6-3.
Kayleigh Hall lost a tough three-set match at No. 3 singles to Valeriia Kashina, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, Lopez lost a tough match at No. 5 singles to Jackie Resler, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 ad
Pyper Brown lost an extended match at No. 6 singles to Lilit Vardanyan, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Cal State LA will conclude its regular season on Saturday with a home match against UC San Diego.
