OAKLAND -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team finally got to play some tennis on Tuesday and picked up an important NCAA Division II West Region victory.
The Golden Eagles, after having matches postponed in each of the past two days, returned to the courts and posted a 9-0 win over Holy Names on Tuesday at Merritt College. Cal State LA (8-6) picked up its third straight win, but the Golden Eagles had to wait awhile to do it. The Cal State LA-Sonoma State match on Sunday was rained out and the Cal State LA-Holy Names match was pushed back from Monday to Tuesday.
Cal State LA won all three doubles contests to set the tone.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Kayleigh Hall beat Chelea Smithback and Rutendo Gwaze, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles,
Iris Raileanu and
Isabella Lopez beat Stella Dominik and Leticia Vieira, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Pyper Brown beat Mariel Bautista and Taylor Barajas, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
Cal State LA then won all six singles matches in straight sets to close out the match. Matsuoka beat Smithback at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4, Sokolova beat Gwaze, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, Hall beat Dominik at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, Raileanu beat Vieira at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0,
Isabella Lopez beat Julia Golub at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2 and
Pyper Brown beat Taylor Barajas, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a match at Academy of Art.
