Golden Eagles Drop Opener To Chico State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a rough beginning, a rough ending and not much to celebrate in between in a series-opening loss to Chico State Saturday night at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles surrendered four runs in the first and five in the ninth of a 12-0 loss to the Wildcats in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (6-16, 5-6 CCAA) lost its fourth straight game, while Chico State (15-7, 5-4 CCAA) stopped a two-game losing streak.

Chico State built a 7-0 lead after three innings and the game settled down until the Wildcats added five runs on six hits in the ninth. Cal State LA managed seven hits, but left the bases loaded in the sixth inning in its best chance to score when Paul Martinez flied out to deep right to end the threat.

Christian Broussard, Jr. allowed 10 hits and seven runs in 6 2/3 innings for the Golden Eagles while walking five and striking out two. Merrick Patito didn't allow a run over the next 1 1/3 innings.

Chico State got an outstanding start from Clayton Gelfand, who pitched six shutout innings and allowed only four hits. He walked only one and struck out a career-high 10. Noah Villegas, Peter Lecce and Colton Fletcher each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to complete the win.

Cody Snider had a huge night for the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and seven RBI. He had a two-run double in the first, a two-run triple in the third and a three-run home run in the ninth. Chico State had 16 hits in the game and also received nine walks and a hit batter.

Dakota Hernandez and Ryan Welker had two hits each for Cal State LA.

Chico State got four runs on four hits in the first inning after a pickoff attempt went awry. Sonny Cortez dropped down a bunt single and took second on a grounder. As Broussard attempted a pickoff at second, Cortez took off for third and when Angel Sanchez' throw got away from third baseman Paul Martinez, Cortez jogged in with the first run of the game. Snider blooped a double down the left-field line for two more runs and Josh Falco singled in the final run of the inning.

Snider tripled in two runs in the third and scored on another single by Falco to make it 7-0 and Snider's three-run home run in the ninth was part of a five-run innings.

Cal State LA's best chance came in the sixth when Garrett Dean reached on a two-out error, Nathan Navarrete singled and Hernandez singled to load the bases. Martinez then hit a ball to deep right, but Falco flagged it down to end the inning.

Cal State LA and Chico State will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
