SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team started slowly and never could recover in an NCAA Division II West Region showdown at UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles struggled in doubles, losing all three points and then lost five of six singles contests in an 8-1 loss to the Tritons on Saturday. Cal State LA (4-4) is now ranked No. 33 in the nation in the latest ITA rankings, while UC San Diego (6-4) has climbed to No. 17.
Cal State LA lost two close matches in doubles and UC San Diego was able to take early control of the match.
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Iris Raileanu dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles to Kyra Scott and Britta Mosser and
Kayleigh Hall and
Pyper Brown lost at No. 3 doubles to Alexandra Weil and Madison Hale, 8-5.
Raileanu continued her strong play and won at No. 4 singles for Cal State LA, beating Weil in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. The Golden Eagles, though, lost the other five singles match in straight sets.
Matsuoka lost to Scott at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-1,
Elizaveta Sokolova lost at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to Jasmine Hosseini, Hall lost at No. 3 singles to Mosser, 6-1, 6-4, Brown lost to Ashley Chao at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and
Isabella Lopez lost to Hale at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 7-5.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday, March 2 with a home match against Division I Villanova at 1:30 p.m.
