Golden Eagles Come Alive In CCAA Victory

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's offense showed some spark on Saturday and the Golden Eagles picked up their first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and held on for an 8-6 win over Cal State San Marcos at the CSUSM Baseball Field. Cal State LA (2-11, 1-1 CCAA) got eight strong innings from starter Christian Broussard, Jr. and collected 11 hits in the win.

The Golden Eagles snapped an 11-game losing streak with the victory.

Armett Johnson was 3-for-4 with one RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Dakota Hernandez was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI. Paul Martinez had two hits and two RBI and Ryan Welker also had a pair of hits.

Broussard went eight innings and scattered 11 hits while giving up three runs, two of them earned. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Jordan Cavazos got the first two outs of the ninth inning before running into trouble and Gabriel Gentner came on to get the final out with the bases loaded.

Tyler Place had three hits for Cal State San Marcos (9-5, 1-1 CCAA). The Cougars had 15 hits in the game, but stranded 11. Cal State LA stranded 10.

The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the first and second innings to take the early lead. Garrett Dean hit into a double play while Hernandez scored in the first and Johnson singled in Trevor Meleski in the second to make it 2-0.

The Cougars, though, scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Martinez singled in two runs to give the Golden Eagles the lead and Meleski singled in a run to make it 5-3.

Cal State LA then made it 7-3 in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Welker. The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 8-3 on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez in the seventh.

The Golden Eagles then had to weather a ninth-inning rally from Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars scored twice in the ninth on Friday to win the opener of the series. The Cougars bunched together four hits and two walks to score three times, but Gentner came on and got the final out on a fly to left to end it.

The Golden Eagles will conclude the series with a doubleheader against the Cougars on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Reeder Field.
