FULLERTON -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team put up a good battle before dropping a 6-1 decision at Division I Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles lost the doubles point despite close calls at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and then lost five of the six singles matches, although two of the singles defeats went three sets.
Cal State LA lost all three doubles contests, but Division I scoring awards one team point for doubles competition.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Iris Raileanu lost by a close 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles to Alexis Valenzuela and Camille De Leon, while
Kayleigh Hall and
Pyper Brown lost in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 7-6, to Danielle Pham and Sarah Nuno.
Raileanu earned the lone singles point for the Golden Eagles by beating Cal State Fullerton's Kaila Portalatin, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
Matsuoka won the first set before falling in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles to Valenzuela, 2-6, 6-2 (10-7) and Brown fell in three sets to Masako Makiba at No. 5 singles after taking the first set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Hall also had a tight match at No. 3 singles, where she lost to De Leon, 6-4, 6-4.
