SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled to the end of a marathon match with Point Loma on Wednesday, but finished with disappointment.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early after doubles and couldn't quite pull off a dramatic comeback in singles in a 6-3 loss to the Sea Lions. Cal State LA (1-1), ranked 16th in the nation, also fell to Point Loma (2-1), ranked No. 33, 6-3 in a match in San Diego early last season.
After singles wins by
Kayleigh Hall and
Isabella Lopez brought the Golden Eagles to within 4-3, No. 1 singles player
Nozomi Matsuoka and No. 2 singles player
Elizaveta Sokolova were edged in three-set matches to end the five-hour contest. Cal State LA won the first set in both three-set matches.
Matsuoka fell to Nikki Newell, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 1 singles and Sokolova fell to Regina von Koch, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
The Golden Eagles put themselves in an early hole by losing two of the three doubles matches. Matsuoka and
Iris Raileanu beat Newell and von Koch at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, but Sokolova and Lopez lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, to Hillary Ramage and Nicole Camaratta and
Snezana Ivanovic and Hall fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, to Michelle Torres and Jen Weissman.
Hall beat Ramage, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles and Lopez beat Weissman at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 7-6, to give the Golden Eagles a chance, but the final two matches went to Point Loma.
