LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team dug itself a hole it couldn't quite get out of Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles trailed by 10 points at halftime and never could catch up in a 61-52 loss to the Seawolves in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (3-16, 2-10 CCAA) lost its fourth straight game, while Sonoma State (12-6, 7-5 CCAA) won its third straight.
Cal State LA pulled to within four points early in the second half and to within three points on three different occasions, but Sonoma State was able to survive each challenge and put the game away with a near-flawless effort at the free-throw line.
Joshua Munzon led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points and five assists, while
Duce Zaid and
Dushon Carter had 12 points each.
David Ahern had a game-high 18 points to lead four Seawolves in double figures. James Davis had 15 points, while James Slade and Luke Cochran had 11 points each.
Cal State LA shot just 36.1 percent for the game (22-of-61) and made only 5-of-19 from 3-point range. Sonoma State was 19-of-46 overall (41.3 percent) and made nearly half of its 3-point attempts (8-of-17).
The Golden Eagles were just 3-of-7 from the free-throw line, while the Seawolves were 15-of-16, including a perfect 14-of-14 in the second half, which enabled them to extend their final margin of victory.
The Golden Eagles struggled offensively in the first half and made only 7-of-27 field-goal attempts. The Seawolves led by as many as 11 points before a late free throw by
Geoffrey Frid made it 26-16 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles got three quick baskets from Carter to open the second half, slicing the deficit to 26-22, but Davis converted a four-point play to stop the surge. Sonoma State then regained its 10-point edge at 36-26 before a layup by Munzon, a layup by
Jonathan Davis, a jumper from
Brandon Hitchman and a 3-pointer by Munzon fueled a 9-2 run that made it 38-35 with 9:30 remaining. Ahern hit a 3-pointer to stop that run before Zaid hit a 3-pointer to make it 41-38 with eight minutes left. Again, though, Ahern responded with a 3-pointer to boost the edge back to six points.
Another 3-pointer by Zaid cut the margin to 51-48 with four minutes to play, but Sonoma State scored the next six points over a three-minute span to extend the lead to nine points and essentially put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m.
