LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was good from start to finish Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game and never looked back in a 63-49 win over the Gators that was one of their most impressive outings of the season. Cal State LA shot 60 percent in the first half while jumping out to a 35-22 halftime lead and limited the Gators to just 31.5 percent shooting.
Cal State LA (4-16, 3-10 CCAA) snapped a four-game losing streak and inched closer to the eighth spot in the CCAA standings. The top eight teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Duce Zaid had a huge game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 28 points, including 17 in the first half. The 28 points were just shy of his career high of 30 that he matched earlier this season in a win over Cal State San Bernardino.
Justin Snavely had eight points and six rebounds, including a crowd-pleasing three-point play on a second-half rush.
Joshua Munzon had seven points and six rebounds and had five straight points to help thwart a San Francisco State run in the second half.
Jon McMurry had 12 points for San Francisco State (11-8, 5-8 CCAA). Nick Calcaterra had eight points and Floyd Wormley had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 44.4 percent for the game (20-of-45) and made 7-of-16 from 3-point range. San Francisco State shot just 31.5 percent (17-of-54) and was just 5-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was effective from the free-throw line, hitting 16-of-20, while San Francisco State was just 10-of-17.
Cal State LA had a 37-34 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 15 for the Gators.
Zaid hit a game-opening 3-pointer and scored the Golden Eagles' first eight points. San Francisco State stayed within striking range for most of the first half before free throws by
Geoffrey Frid and
Brandon Hitchman and a 3-pointer by Zaid gave Cal State LA a 32-19 lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 15 points before settling for a 35-22 halftime lead.
Snavely's three-point play gave the Golden Eagles a 45-28 lead with 15:03 to go and a basket by
Joshua Hopkins gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 47-28, with 13 minutes to go. San Francisco State battled back and got to within 50-42 with 7:39 to go, but a 3-pointer by Munzon and a layup by Munzon pushed the lead back to 55-42 with 5:50 to go.
Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a Homecoming game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
