Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Fall To Late Coyote Comeback

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team got almost everything but a good finish Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles built leads as large as 12 points in the second half, only to see Cal State San Bernardino hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds left and ultimately take a 58-56 decision in Coussoulis Arena. It was a tough loss for Cal State LA (3-14, 2-8 CCAA), which was bidding for its first sweep of the Coyotes since 1998.

Duce Zaid had 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Justin Snavely had eight points and five rebounds. Andre McPhail and Collin Johnson had seven points each.

Keith Smith had 18 points to lead Cal State San Bernardino (6-9, 3-8 CCAA), while Juan Martinez had 17 points. The hero, though, was Darryl Adigwu, who hit what turned out to be the game-winning 3-pointer that broke a 55-55 tie with six seconds left.

Cal State LA shot just 36.5 percent (19-of-52), while Cal State San Bernardino shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48). The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-15 from 3-point range, while the Coyotes were 8-fo-23. Cal State LA was 14-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Cal State San Bernardino was 8-of-14.

Cal State LA had a big 44-23 rebounding edge, although Cal State San Bernardino was able to grab two key rebounds in the waning seconds to help preserve its lead.

The Golden Eagles committed 16 turnovers to nine for the Coyotes.

Cal State LA trailed early, but used an 8-0 run to grab a 14-10 lead. A three-point play by McPhail started the run, which also included two free throws from Dushon Carter and a 3-pointer by Zaid. Cal State LA led by as many as eight points in the first half following a 3-pointer by Snavely that made it 19-11 before settling for a 29-27 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the game, 47-35, after a 3-pointer by Snavely with 9:29 to go and still led by 11 points, 51-40, after a basket by McPhail with 5:45 remaining. A layup by Zaid made it 53-43 with 5:09 to go, but Cal State LA was unable to make another basket down the stretch. A pair of free throws by Geoffrey Frid gave the Golden Eagles a 55-47 lead with 3:49 remaining, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the next 11 points, capped by Adigwu's 3-pointer.

Jonathan Davis made the first of two free throws to make it 58-56 with four seconds left, but Cal State San Bernardino got the rebound. Then, after the Coyotes missed the front end of a one-and-one with two seconds left, Martinez got the offensive rebound and ran out the clock.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at UC San Diego.
