LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was unable to slow down a hot-shooting UC San Diego team Saturday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The No. 17 Tritons made 8-of-10 of their 3-point attempts in the first half on their way to a 79-55 victory over the Golden Eagles in RIMAC Arena. Cal State LA (3-15, 2-9 CCAA) scored the opening basket of the game for its only lead, but UC San Diego (15-3, 10-2 CCAA) scored the next 10 points and never trailed again.
Duce Zaid had 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals, while
Joshua Munzon had 12 points and four steals.
Adam Klie and Drew Dyer had 17 points each for UC San Diego, while Chris Hansen had 12 points and Aleks Lipovic had 10 points.
Justin Snavely had nine points while hitting 3-of-4 from 3-point range for the Golden Eagles, while
Jonathan Davis was perfect from the field and scored eight points.
Cal State LA shot just 36.5 percent (19-of-52) for the game, while UC San Diego shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44). The Tritons were even better from long-range, knocking down 12-of-19 from behind the arc. UC San Diego was 15-of-25 overall from the field in the first half while building a 44-29 halftime lead.
UC San Diego also had a 33-26 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed 11 turnovers to 10 for the Tritons.
Munzon scored the opening basket of the game, but the Tritons scored the next 10 points. Two free throws by Zaid and a 3-pointer by Snavely cut the deficit to 15-14 and a dunk by Davis kept the Golden Eagles within 18-16, but the Tritons used runs of 10-2 and 13-2 to extend their lead to 42-26. A 3-pointer by Snavely stopped the second run and UC San Diego settled for its 15-point halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles closed to within 14 points early in the second half, but the Tritons quickly opened up a 55-33 lead and never led by less than 14 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday night with a home game against Sonoma State.
