SURPRISE, AZ -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team wound up fourth in its first-ever trip to the PacWest Conference Championships.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 22nd in the nation, fell to No. 7 Hawaii Pacific, 5-1, Saturday, in the match for third place at the conference tournament. Cal State L.A. (10-10), which entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, beat No. 4 seed Azusa Pacific in the first round, 5-3, before dropping its final two matches to top-seed BYU-Hawaii and No. 2 seed Hawaii Pacific. All three of Cal State L.A.'s opponents were ranked higher than the Golden Eagles. Azusa Pacific is currently No. 18 in the nation, BYU-Hawaii is No. 3 and Hawaii Pacific is No. 7.
The Golden Eagles dropped all three doubles contests on Saturday.
Victoria Vo and
Elizaveta Sokolova put up the best battle at No. 3 doubles, falling to Sofia Tavitian and Vivian Hansen, 8-5.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros were beaten at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, by Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski and
Iris Raileanu and
Alexandra Makashov lost at No. 2 doubles to Lea Kruse-Utermann and Lorena Gheorghe, 8-3.
Vo picked up Cal State L.A.'s lone point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Tavitian. Landeros fell at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to Hoynaski and Raileanu fell at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. The other three singles matches were unfinished when Hawaii Pacific clinched the match.
