LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team picked the wrong day to try to break out of its current slump.
The Golden Eagles ran into a pair of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's top pitchers and were swept in a doubleheader Saturday at Reeder Field, falling to Cal Poly Pomona by scores of 13-2 and 4-1. Cal State L.A. (23-17, 18-14 CCAA) had the lead or were tied late in three of the four games in the series, but wound up with no victories against Cal Poly Pomona (31-11, 23-9 CCAA).
Cal State L.A., after winning 10 of 11 games earlier this month, have now lost six straight and seven of its last eight games.
David Trejo hit his first career home run for the Golden Eagles in the opener, while
Rodrigo Martinez was 2-for-2 with one run scored in the nightcap.
Cal Poly Pomona got outstanding pitching in both games from its starters. Ryan Olson allowed six hits and two runs while walking one and striking out 10 in seven innings of the opener, while Cody Ponce allowed five hits and one run while walking one and striking out seven in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles managed only 11 hits in the doubleheader and were not sharp defensively, committing five errors in the two games.
Cal Poly Pomona broke open the opener by scoring five times in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead and then added seven runs over the final three innings to win going away. Kyle Garlick hit a home run and was 2-for-5, while Ryan Webberley and Mike Philip each drove in three runs.
Ryan Welker was 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Golden Eagles, while
Jesus Cuevas was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Trejo launched his home run to left field in the eighth inning to account for the final run.
James Mendez tossed two scoreless innings of relief before allowing two runs in the seventh.
Jordan Cavazos allowed three hits and one run over the final two innings.
The nightcap was a brilliant pitchers' duel between Ponce and Cal State L.A.'s
Ralph Ramirez for five innings before the Broncos got a go-ahead two-run home run by Zidek in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.
Ramirez had only allowed a wind-aided home run to Christian Kelley leading off the game until the sixth. Ponce, meanwhile, blanked the Golden Eagles until the fifth when
Rodrigo Martinez walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt by
Dakota Hernandez, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Trejo.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the seventh with a double by
Jake Jelmini and a single by Martinez, but Ponce struck out two and got the final out via groundout to end the game.
Cal State L.A. will open a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Friday in San Bernardino before concluding the series at Reeder Field on Saturday at 2 p.m.
