SURPRISE, AZ -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team ran into a powerhouse Friday in the semi-finals of the PacWest Conference Championships.
One day after a thrilling 5-4 win over No. 4 seed Azusa Pacific, the No. 5 seed Golden Eagles fell to the eight-time defending conference champion BYU-Hawaii, 5-0, at the Surprise Tennis and Raquet Club. Cal State L.A. (10-9), ranked 22nd in the nation, lost for the second time this season to No. 3 BYU-Hawaii.
The Golden Eagles battled well, but simply ran into a tough opponent. Cal State L.A. lost all three doubles points as
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros lost to Nanna Zhang and Min Liu, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles,
Alexandra Makashov and
Iris Raileanu lost at No. 2 doubles to Marietta Tuionetoa and Jin Jin Han, 8-1, and
Elizaveta Sokolova and
Victoria Vo lost at No. 3 doubles to Jade Griffin and Kanela Adamson, 8-4.
The Seasiders then wrapped up the match with two singles wins. Tuionetoa beat Sokolova, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and Jeong-Min Jeon beat Makashov, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Cal State L.A., appearing in its first PacWest Championships, will now play for third place on Saturday in a match against No. 2 seed Hawaii Pacific at 2 p.m.
