POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team came up just short for a second straight game against California Collegiate Athletic Association-leading Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
The Golden Eagles, who dropped a one-run decision on Thursday, lost to the Broncos, 6-4, on Friday at Scolinos Field. Cal State L.A. (23-15, 18-12) took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by
Trent Zaks, but the Broncos (29-11, 21-9 CCAA) struck for three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles had the tying runs on base in the top of the ninth inning with one out, but
Ryan Welker lined into a game-ending double play to end it.
Zaks was 2-for-3 with his home run and was also hit by a pitches twice. Welker was 2-for-5 with one run scored,
Jesus Cuevas was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored and
Lawrence Dominguez was 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
Icezack Flemming went six strong innings and was in position to pick up a victory before Cal Poly Pomona's rally in the seventh. Flemming allowed five hits and only one earned run while walking only one and striking out eight.
Reed Reznicek pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and
Adan Cabrales gave the Golden Eagles a chance for a ninth-inning rally after retiring the only batter he faced to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
Michael Koval pitched 2 1/3 innings of strong relief to pick up the win for Cal Poly Pomona, while Austin Boyle got out of the ninth-inning difficulty to pick up his second save in as many games.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third, but the Golden Eagles scored twice in the fourth to take the lead. Cuevas doubled Welker to third and Welker scored on an error. Cuevas advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Trevor Meleski.
Dominguez doubled and scored on an error in the fifth to make it 3-1, but Cal Poly Pomona got a run-scoring double by Caleb Romo in the sixth and scored another run on an error to tie it at 3-3.
Zaks then hit his team-leading fourth home run to give Cal State L.A. its last lead, 4-3, in the seventh before the Broncos scored three times in the bottom of the inning. Matt Munoz delivered a two-run pinch-hit single to break a 4-4 tie.
Jake Jelmini reached on an error and Zaks was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth, but Welker's liner to second was turned into an unassisted double play to end it.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona with a doubbleheader at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
