LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team wrote a different – and more successful – ending to a scenario the Golden Eagles saw last week.
Just five days after dropping a 5-4 decision to Azusa Pacific in Azusa despite winning two of the three doubles contests, the Golden Eagles got a clutch performance at No. 5 singles from
Alexandra Makashov to beat the Cougars, 5-4, Tuesday at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-7) once again took two of the three doubles contests, only this time the Golden Eagles were able to split the six singles matches in another tightly-contested battle between two nationally-ranked teams.
Cal State L.A. is ranked 22
nd in the most recent rankings, while Azusa Pacific is No. 18.
The match came down to Makashov's battle at No. 5 singles against Azusa Pacific's Lindsey Yeom. Makashov hit a clean winner on match point to secure the win for Cal State L.A., 6-3, 7-5. Makashov trailed, 5-4, in the second set before winning the final three games to take the match.
Cal State L.A. also got singles wins at No. 3 singles from
Elizaveta Sokolova, who beat Azusa Pacific's Jackie Resler, 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 6 singles, where
Victoria Vo beat Sierra Troxel, 6-3, 6-1.
Cal State L.A. picked up two points in doubles.
Nozomi Matsuoka and
Sonia Landeros beat Valeria Kashina and Natalie Johnson for the second straight time at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, while Vo and Sokolova avenged a defeat last week and beat Danae Ingwaldson and Bethany Duval at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, reversing the outcome from last week.
Iris Raileanu and Makashov fell to Yeom and Resler at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against No. 11 Academy of Art at 11 a.m.
