SAN MARCOS – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had an impressive night in a three-set win over Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles hit at a solid .260 percentage and swept past the Cougars, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16, Tuesday in Hunter Gym. Cal State LA (17-7, 9-6 CCAA) climbed into sole possession of fourth place in a tightly-packed CCAA race.
Iona Lofrano had a match-high 16 kills and 17 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
JamieAnn Bero had eight kills and three blocks and
Lauren Gomez had eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks.
Taylor DeGraaf had 13 kills and nine digs for Cal State San Marcos (6-20, 3-14 CCAA), while Brooke Butler had 11 kills and three blocks.
Kelsey Molnar had 31 set assists and 10 digs, while
Makayla Taylor had 15 digs.
Cal State LA had a 44-42 advantage in kills and outhit the Cougars, .260-.120. The Golden Eagles had a 9-5 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the opening set thanks to a 6-0 run that included two kills by Gomez and one by
Taylor Kushner. A block by
Mia Alcaraz and Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 and an attack error by the Cougars ended the set.
The Golden Eagles broke a 16-16 tie with a 5-0 run to take the lead for good in the second set. A kill by Gomez, two blocks by Bero and Lofrano and a kill by Bero highlighted the run. Cal State LA took a 24-19 lead after a kill by Lofrano and eventually won the set on another kill by Lofrano.
Cal State LA trailed early in the third set, 11-7, but took the lead for good at 15-14 after a block by Alcaraz and
Yamani Wallace. Two kills by Bero, a kill by Lofrano, a service ace from Taylor and another kill by Bero helped the Golden Eagles open up a 20-14 lead. A kill by
Angela Thurmond got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-16 and an attack error by the Cougars after a serve by
Lexi Resch ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Humboldt State.
