LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Friday night with another strong performance.
The Golden Eagles grabbed control of the match from the start and never let up in a 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Humboldt State in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (18-7, 10-6 CCAA) remains in fourth place in the CCAA with four matches remaining. The top eight teams in the conference will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles were able to avenge a four-set loss to Humboldt State (9-12, 7-10 CCAA) in Arcata on Oct. 23. Cal State LA has won three in a row since then.
JamieAnn Bero had an outstanding match with 13 kills and five blocks. She recorded her 13 kills in just 18 swings and had a hitting percentage of .667.
Iona Lofrano added 11 kills and nine digs.
Kaitlyn Dunaway and Symone Hayden had 12 kills each to lead the 'Jacks.
The Golden Eagles had a 41-39 edge in kills and an 8-5 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .289 percentage and held the 'Jacks to just .101 hitting.
Kelsey Molnar had 29 set assists, two kills and two blocks, while
Makayla Taylor had 12 digs.
Angela Thurmond had five kills and a .500 hitting percentage and also recorded a solo block, while
Taylor Kushner had six kills and one block.
The Golden Eagles led almost from the start and opened up a quick 14-10 lead in the opening set after a kill by Kushner. The 'Jacks closed to within 15-14 and were still within striking distance at 20-17 before a kill by Bero, two attack errors and a block by Molnar and
Mia Alcaraz got the Golden Eagles to set point. Humboldt State saved two set points, but Lofrano delivered a kill to end the set.
The second set was tied at 20-20 before a kill by
Lauren Gomez, a block by Bero and Gomez, a kill by Bero and a solo block by Thurmond got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20. After Humboldt State got kills from Dunaway and Hayden, a kill by Thurmond ended the set.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 16-11 lead in the final set and held off a late 'Jacks charge. Humboldt State closed to within 21-19 and 22-20, but kills by Lofrano and Thurmond got the Golden Eagles to match point. A kill by Hayden extended the match, but a Humboldt State attack error finished the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a home match against conference-leading Sonoma State at 2 p.m.
