LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had some good moments during Saturday afternoon's match against conference-leading Sonoma State, but the Golden Eagles simply didn't have enough of them.
The Golden Eagles held leads in all three sets, but Sonoma State was the steadier team and posted a 25-20, 27-25, 25-19 victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Sonoma State (20-3, 16-1 CCAA) won its 16
th straight match while handing Cal State LA (18-8, 10-7 CCAA) only its second home loss of the season.
Iona Lofrano had 12 kills, 12 digs and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
JamieAnn Bero had 11 kills and seven blocks.
Caylie Seitz had 11 kills and a pair of blocks for the Seawolves, while Madelyn Densberger had nine kills and 11 digs and Kelsey McIntire had nine kills and one block.
Sonoma State had a 47-42 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .239 - .139. Cal State LA was hurt by 23 hitting errors, 19 of which were not caused by blocks. Sonoma State had just 14 attack errors and 11 of those were because of Cal State LA blocks.
Taylor Kushner had seven kills and 14 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Makayla Taylor had a match-high 21 digs.
Cal State LA opened up a 16-12 lead in the opening set after a block by
Kelsey Molnar and
Mia Alcaraz, but Sonoma State scored five straight points to erase the deficit. After a kill by Lofrano tied the set at 17-17, the Seawolves scored three straight points and never trailed again. A kill by Bero made it 22-20, but Sonoma State scored the final three points to take the opening frame.
Cal State LA led early in the second set, 10-8, after a block by
Lauren Gomez and
Angela Thurmond, but Sonoma State went on a 7-1 run to take the lead and eventually opened up a 24-19 advantage after a kill by Seitz. A kill by Bero saved the first set point and the Golden Eagles scored five more points on Gomez' serve to take a 25-24 lead. A kill by Lofrano, a solo block by Lofrano, an attack error, an ace by Gomez and a block by Bero and Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point.
Sonoma State, though, got kills by Seitz, Densberger and Reddick to take the second set.
Cal State LA opened up an early 11-7 lead in the third set, but, once again, Sonoma State rallied. The Seawolves went on an 11-3 run to take control of the set, 18-14. Cal State LA battled back to close to within 19-18 after a kill by Kushner, but the Seawolves won six of the next seven points to close out the match.
