PULLMAN, WA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team received a sensational performance from
Joshua Munzon in a determined effort against Washington State Tuesday night.
Munzon equaled a career high with 24 points and the Golden Eagles put up a battle in a hard-fought 74-57 loss to the Cougars in a game televised on the Pac-12 Network. Cal State LA (0-5) trailed by just nine points with 18 minutes to play, but Washington State (3-0) went on a 13-0 run to extend its lead.
Munzon was a sizzling 11-of-13 from the floor and knocked down two of his three attempts from 3-point range. He also added three steals. He equaled his career high for points he originally set on Dec. 22, 2013 against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Munzon hit all seven of his shots in the first half while scoring 15 of the Golden Eagles' 25 first-period points.
Justin Snavely had 11 points, including nine from three second-half 3-pointers, while
Geoffrey Frid had 10 points and six rebounds.
Conor Clifford led four Washington State players in double figures with 18 points. Que Johnson had 15 points, Ike Iroegbu had 10 points and seven rebounds and Renard Suggs had 10 points.
Cal State LA shot 42 percent from the floor (22-of-52), while Washington State shot 54 percent (28-of-52). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-17 from 3-point range, while the Cougars were 5-of-12. Cal State LA was 7-of-12 from the free-throw line, while Washington State was 13-of-19.
Washington State had a 34-23 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles took their only lead when
Bobby Miles opened the game with a layup, but Washington State regrouped quickly and scored the next eight points to take the lead for good. A Frid basket stopped the run and a basket by Munzon cut the deficit to 8-6. A Munzon layup got the Golden Eagles to within 11-10 and a dunk by Frid kept the Golden Eagles to within 21-14 halfway through the first period. Washington State, though, opened up leads as large as 16 points and still had a 35-20 lead before Munzon hit a 3-pointer and then made a steal and layup to slice the halftime margin to 37-25.
A 3-pointer by Munzon got the Golden Eagles to within 39-30 with 18 minutes left in the game, but Washington State scored the next 13 points before a 3-pointer by
Brandon Hitchman stopped the run. Washington State then scored the next eight points to take its biggest lead of the game, 60-33, with 10:15 remaining.
Cal State LA fought back and a 3-pointer by Snavely and a layup by
Duce Zaid got the Golden Eagles within 67-51 with three minutes to play. A steal and layup by
Dushon Carter and a 3-pointer by Snavely got the Golden Eagles to within 69-56, but Washington State scored the next five points and a free throw by Carter finished the scoring.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Point Loma at 5 p.m.
