LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had its offense clicking on Saturday against Point Loma, but it wasn't enough to produce a victory.

The Golden Eagles had a season-high 84 points, but still fell short to the Sea Lions, 93-84, in a non-conference game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (0-6) shot 50.8 percent for the game, but Point Loma (4-2) ran its offense to near perfection to get the victory.

The Sea Lions shot 50 percent for the game and also made nine 3-pointers in 19 attempts. Point Loma was almost perfect at the free-throw line, hitting 26 of 27 attempts to keep the Golden Eagles at arm's length down the stretch.

Dushon Carter scored a career-high 22 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures, while
Joshua Munzon had 19 points and four assists.
Duce Zaid had 16 points and six rebounds.

Tanner Lancona had a game-high 26 points to lead five Sea Lions in double figures. Josh Rodriguez had 19 points, Sam Okhotin had 14 points and four rebounds, Zach Burnham had 13 points and Judd Welfringer had 12 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.

Cal State LA was 30-of-59 (50.8 percent) for the game, but hit just 4-of-14 of its 3-point tries. Point Loma was 29-of-58 (50 percent) and made nine of 19 attempts from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 20-of-23 from the free-throw line, but Point Loma was even better, making 26-of-27.

Cal State LA had a 34-27 rebounding edge, but had 10 turnovers to only five for the Sea Lions.

Geoffrey Frid had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while
Tahron Morrison had seven points and five rebounds.

There were a total of 10 ties in the first half, the last coming after a three-point play by Munzon to make it 35-35 with 3:10 remaining in the period. Lancona, though, hit a 3-pointer to give the Sea Lions the lead and they led the rest of the way. Point Loma built leads as large as five points before a layup by
Collin Johnson made it 42-39 at halftime.

Cal State LA pulled to within one point, after a basket by Frid made it 44-43 with 18:31 to go, but Point Loma went on a 9-0 run to open up its first double-digit lead of the game, 53-43.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 13 points before fighting back and cutting the deficit to five points, 60-55, following a Carter layup with 10 minutes to play. Cal State LA stayed within striking distance the rest of the way, but Point Loma made enough free throws late to extend its final margin of victory to nine points.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with its CCAA opener at Cal Poly Pomona.
