Golden Eagles See Upset Bid Fall Short In Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona on the ropes Wednesday night in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both programs, but the Broncos were able to escape with a win.

The Golden Eagles grabbed a 59-55 lead with 3:12 to go, but didn't score again and fell to the Broncos, 65-59, in Kellogg Gym. Cal State LA (0-7, 0-1 CCAA) rallied from an early 10-point deficit and held leads for much of the second half before coming up empty down the stretch. The Golden Eagles had four missed shots and two turnovers in their last six possessions.

Collin Johnson had a big game for Cal State LA, pouring in 16 points and grabbing four rebounds. Joshua Munzon also had 16 points and four steals.

Jeremy Dennis led three players in double figures for Cal Poly Pomona (7-0, 1-0 CCAA). Jordan Faison had 14 points and eight rebounds and Quentin Taylor had 12 points.

Cal State LA shot 45.5 percent for the game (20-of-44), while Cal Poly Pomona shot 54.8 percent (23-of-42). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-16 from 3-point range, while the Broncos were 8-of-16. Cal State LA also shot well from the free-throw line, making 12 of 15 attempts, while the Broncos were 11-of-18.

Cal Poly Pomona had a slim 26-24 rebounding edge and the Golden Eagles committed 13 turnovers to 14 for the Broncos.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early, 15-5, but used a 9-0 run built on a basket by Joel Brokenbrough, a layup by Munzon, two free throws by Munzon and a 3-pointer by Johnson. The Golden Eagles tied it at 19-19 after a pair of free throws by Geoffrey Frid and a 3-pointer by Duce Zaid and, after trailing 23-21, scored seven straight points on a pair of free throws by Munzon, a 3-pointer by Johnson and two more free throws by Munzon to take a 28-23 lead. Cal State LA settled for a 28-26 halftime lead.

A basket by Zaid pushed the lead to 30-26 and, after Cal Poly Pomona rallied to take a 39-37 advantage, a 3-pointer by Munzon, a layup by Johnson and two free throws by Tahron Morrison gave Cal State LA a 44-39 lead with 13 minutes to go. The Golden Eagles held five-point leads three more times after a jumper by Morrison made it 46-41, a basket by Brokenbrough made it 48-43 and a tip-in by Dushon Carter made it 50-45 with 10 minutes to go.

After Cal Poly Pomona went on a run to take a 52-50 lead, a jumper by Johnson tied it and two straight 3-pointers by Johnson gave the Golden Eagles their 59-55 lead with three minutes left.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Humboldt State.
