Golden Eagles Snap Streak With Win Over Toros

Box Score LOS ANGELES – A flip of the calendar and a return to Reeder Field made a difference for Cal State L.A.'s baseball team Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles put an end to a frustrating 15-game losing streak with a 6-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. (15-30, 13-23 CCAA) went winless in April, but got May off to a promising start.

Cal State L.A. was playing its first home game since an April 5 doubleheader against UC San Diego and 11 of the team's 15 losses in April were played on the road. Cal State L.A. upped its home record to 11-9 with the victory.

David Armas had a strong performance for the Golden Eagles in his final start for the program. He worked eight strong innings and got the win after allowing only seven hits and three runs. He carried a 6-2 lead into the ninth inning and, after allowing the first two batters to reach base, was replaced by Reed Reznicek. After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced, Reznicek got the final three outs.

The Golden Eagles were helped by a strong defensive play in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Taylor Kahanowitch's sacrifice fly made it 6-3, but Hayden Maurice was thrown out trying to advance from second to third by catcher Cody Doyle and Reznicek got the final out for the save.

Doyle was also a star at the plate, lining a triple to the right-field corner that cleared the bases as part of a four-run seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (21-25, 15-22) got a two-run home run from Kamran Young that tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. An inning later, Doyle's three-run triple put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.

David Haerle started for the Toros and gave up six hits and six runs. Aaron Gray and Bubby Rossman each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when a sacrifice fly by Niko Garcia scored Kyle Peralta. Cal State L.A. made it 2-0 in the fourth when Garcia singled in David Trejo, who had kept the inning going with a two-out double.

Armas sailed into the sixth inning with a shutout, but Young's two-run home run with Peter Ives on base tied the game.

In the seventh, Trent Zaks drew a walk, Manny Acosta was hit by a pitch and Casey Ryan reached first when he bunted and Haerle was unsuccessful getting Zaks at third. After a pitching change, Doyle promptly lined his three-run triple on a 1-0 pitch to give the Golden Eagles the lead. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Peralta.

Trejo had two hits for the Golden Eagles, while Garcia drove in a pair of runs.

Cal State L.A. will play its final home game of the season on Friday when the Golden Eagles host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their 11 seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
