LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team had several close calls recently against nationally-ranked opponents and the Golden Eagles were probably due for the successful result they got on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, ranked 20
th in the nation, swept the three doubles contests on their way to a 7-2 win over No. 17 UC San Diego at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (5-9) snapped a nine-match losing streak and evened the season series with UC San Diego (8-14).
Cal State L.A. took early control of the match thanks to its performance in doubles.
Leora Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal beat Kyra Scott and Paula Chou at No. 1 doubles, 8-3 and
Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zegarian beat Nava Nowamooz and Shannon Theisen at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. The match of the day came at No. 3 doubles where Cal State L.A.'s
Sonia Landeros and
Tiffany Leung rallied for a 9-8 win over Tara Vanooteghem and Laura Wilke.
The Golden Eagles clinched the win when Postal beat Nowamooz at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and
Victoria Vo beat Theisen at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Cal State L.A. also got wins at No. 1 singles from Hemmerich, who beat Scott, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 and at No. 2 singles from Landeros, who beat Chou, 6-7, 6-3, 10-8.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Monday with a match at Azusa Pacific.
