LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team picked up a true team victory Friday in a big NCAA Division II West Region win over Fresno Pacific.
The Golden Eagles got contributions from all seven of their players in a 6-3 victory over the Sunbirds. Cal State L.A. (6-10) won for the second time in its last three matches. The Golden Eagles, ranked 20
th in the nation, picked up their second win over a nationally-ranked opponent in a week with the triumph over No. 33 Fresno Pacific (9-13).
Cal State L.A. got off to a strong start by winning two of the three doubles contests and then wrapped up the match with four straight-set victories in singles play.
Leora Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal earned the first point of the match for the Golden Eagles with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Petra Jurova and Angelika Sobiecka.
Sonia Landeros and
Tiffany Leung held on for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Erin Carlson and Matilda Ackered after jumping out to a 7-0 lead.
Cal State L.A. wrapped up the victory with four singles points. Postal beat Laure-Anne Josso at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2, Leung beat Sobiecka at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1,
Victoria Vo beat Megan Lee, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and
Samantha Sismundo beat Ackered at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its season with a match against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their five seniors –
Leora Hemmerich,
Tiffany Leung,
Samantha Sismundo,
Sevana Zargarian and
Tiffani Shaik – in pre-match ceremonies.
